Steve’s Steg!

Last year, I wrote a blogpost about stegosaurs in Whitby, after I found a lovely block of fallen sandstone containing Deltapodus (stegosaur) footprints in it.

Last week, The Rock Showman gave me a shout and said “I’ve found another Deltapodus, in Saltwick Bay, and I’ve left it by the path for all to enjoy!”

As I was leading a Natural Wonders/Fossils-UK fossil tour to Saltwick Bay at the weekend, I went to see it, and show it to all the budding palaeontologists on the trip, and add a HIGH-QUALITY information board. Should you want to see the footprint yourself, the What3Words location is https://what3words.com/relished.tokens.funny

Cast in muddy sandstone, a Middle Jurassic dinosaur footprint (Deltapodus) from Saltwick Bay.

I then created a 3D PolyCam model of the footprint, which enables you to better understand its shape and structure, and allows people who can’t get to Saltwick Bay to enjoy it.

Hopefully it’ll still be there next time I lead a Saltwick Bay fossil hunt…
