Yorkshire Geology Month 2025

Yes, yes, I promised videos and blogposts and all sorts this year, and here we are in April and I’ve hardly added anything to Fossilhub. So, let’s remedy that with a post about the upcoming Yorkshire Geology Month.

Yorkshire: a mosaic of magnificent geology.

It all begins on Saturday April 26th – Yorkshire Geology Day, no less – with Geology Rocks at the National Coal Mining Museum for England. This fab, free event runs from 10am to 5pm, with fossil-handling, the chance to get your own rocks cut and polished, tours of the mine, lots of stands, and some super science shows in The Rock Showman’s Booth!

The Rock Showman’s Booth at Scarborough Spa. If you’ve never been inside it before, you must!

Then, after lunch, the Yorkshire Geological Society have invited a group of speakers to discuss The Rocks That Built Yorkshire. One of them (the speakers, not the rocks) is me, and I will be telling tales of The Building of York. What is York built on? What is York built from? And how has that changed over time? I will be trying to squeeze over 2 billion years of geological (and almost 2000 years of human) history into a 20-minute talk. Luckily there’s a refreshment break immediately afterwards.

Yorkshire fossils: very refreshing

If you can’t make it to Wakefield, don’t fret, for the YGS has a busy programme of events across the county during May. From Huddersfield to Hull via Runswick Bay and Flamborough Head, Yorkshire Geology Month offers geological goodness for everyone.

I’m not quite covering the region, but I will be leading a few different events during May, so if any of these take your fancy, I’ll be delighted to see you:

Bank Holiday Monday May 5th, 10am-12pm – York Earth Walk
Uncover 2 billion years of Earth history on the streets of York! We’ll explore the origins of York, learn about some of the city’s pioneering Earth scientists, and take a different perspective on York’s oldest building. Book your tickets here.
Start: Bar Lane, just inside Micklegate Bar.
Finish: Pebble mosaic, York Museum Gardens.

Bank Holiday Monday May 5th, 1.30-3pm – York Family Fossil Hunt
Find fab fossils hiding in the gardens, streets and buildings of historic York! Fun for all the family in a 75-minute stroll across the city centre – book your tickets here.
Start: outside the Yorkshire Museum, York Museum Gardens.
Finish: Chapter House Street, near York Minster.

Sunday May 18th, 11.30am-1.30pm – Runswick Bay: In Search of Sea Dragons
I’m leading this family fossil trip for Fossils UK to one of Britain’s best fossiling beaches. It also just happens to be the place where we found a Jurassic croc skull a couple of years ago. Book your tickets here.

Crocodile rock!

Saturday May 31st, 2pm-4pm – Runswick Bay: Fossil Safari for Adults
This Fossils UK trip is a little different, as it is pitched as an adults-only excursion. No children allowed! So if you fancy a slightly different perspective on the palaeontology of Runswick Bay, book your tickets here. WARNING: I might co-opt you into some of my scientific research

Earth scientist in York, fossilist across Yorkshire. Co-director of the Yorkshire Fossil Festival and palaeontologist for hire. Can be found twittering, facebooking, and instagramming as @fossiliam.
